For years, I’ve been helping people to align and tune in with the creative flow of life. And while I helped them accelerate their personal transformation they kept asking: 

"What does self-mastery really mean?" – What's the process?" 

The meaning of self-mastery can be found in the theme the 'Dark Night of the Soul.' It is a dark psychological phase we must all pass through on our journey. When unaware of the transformational process, people tend to stress, struggle and repeat painful karmic lessons.  

For some people this dark psychological phase can last longer than others, sometimes many years or decades. It depends on one’s willingness to cooperate with the requirements of the Soul. 

When you attune with your Soul and the creative flow of life, you attract the ways and means of attaining success in your work and prosperity in all things like health, happiness and  enlightenment on your spiritual path. 

There is an ancient system called 'The Wheel of Time & Space' that can help us be in tune with the creative of life throughout the year. It is one of the major Archetypes also known as the Wheel of Life, the Wheel of Fortune and Destiny. 

I'll introduce it later on because it support and provides us with a working knowledge of the higher laws of life.

THE DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL

The ancient Essenes were the first to call this phase 'The Obscure Night of the Soul' although it can be an illumined experience as well.

The Dark Night of the Soul is a blessing in disguise because it strengthens the heart, tests the intention, accelerates our transformation and gives us an understanding of our life’s purpose and mission.

This dark stage is usually experienced severely between the ages of 42 to 49 as we enter into a major activity of our life. 

During this dark phase, we experience a major change of life – a letting go of an old form of life. It could be a change in our work and/or a change in personal circumstances.

The unpleasant experiences are karmic lessons that we have to recognise and learn how to cancel once and for all.

If a karmic lesson becomes useless and provides nothing more to your inner development, it will be released from its karmic attachment. It is a wonderful freeing experience.

After reflecting on past experiences, pleasant and unpleasant, and being grateful for what life has given us so far, we should awaken to the idea that life can start again at 50, then it will be a new beginning in which fresh energies and inspiration can flow in. 

However, for some people this dark psychological phase can last longer than others, sometimes many years or decades. It depends on one’s willingness to let go of the illusions and fantasies created by the ego and the willingness to cooperate with the requirements of the Soul. 

As we go through this difficult dark phase, many blessings are given along the way to support and encourage us. 

 4 STAGES TO SELF-MASTERY 

There are four stages in this spiritual work leading to self-mastery.

These four stages belong to the four levels of consciousness: First Stage with the Physical – Second Stage with the Emotional – Third Stage with the Mental and the Fourth Stage with the Spiritual.

First Stage begins when you experiences melancholy, sadness, depression or anxiety. This dark, heavy and serious condition can affect your health and happiness. However, it is a studious phase for you to reflect on what is happening in your life and why and what life is all about.  

Physical Level – You need to control excesses of food, alcohol, sexuality, drugs and physical exercises. Eliminate things that impede your well-being. You can overcome these extremes through determination, discipline, willpower, self-love and self-respect. 

Second Stage occurs when you put your efforts to control your emotions and reactions; recognize when you project yourself on people or things and when you act as a victim or have self-pity.

Emotional Level – You learn to detach yourself and take space to calm down your emotions. You develop more peace and harmony in the emotions, more patience and compassion. 

Third Stage occurs when you become more aware of yourself and control your thoughts. Your Soul speaks strongly to your mind and requires that you stop identifying yourself with the ego’s desires and thoughts, which can be selfish, possessive and obsessive. It is at this stage that you can reach clarity of mind capable of clear perception and free of dogmatic theories.

Mental Level – You learn to cancel karmic lessons to put an end to unnecessary sufferings and struggles. Through this renewal process, mental limitations and blockages are gradually removed as you cooperate willingly with the Soul’s requirements. You become more tolerant, thoughtful and respectful. You are more balanced, centered and in harmony with yourself, Nature and the Universe. 

Fourth Stage occurs when you discover the essence of your Soul and who and what you truly are. You identify yourself with your Soul’s qualities of light, love and freedom. This stage is associated with the intelligence of the heart and the ability to allow the Soul to take control of your life. In other words, it is the ability to make your will – the Will of God, the Will of Love.

Spiritual Level – Your Soul allows you to pass and emerge into higher life and consciousness. The ego interferes less in your daily life and embraces the positive influences from the Soul. That's because a healthy ego surrenders itself to the higher power of the Soul. At this level of consciousness, the Divine Light infuses you with illumination which is a state of freedom.
You become more passionate, confident, spontaneous, open to life and in love with life itself; more prosperous in all things, more peaceful and joyful. These are the gifts from the Dark Night of the Soul.
